Nongthymmai MDC Winston Tony Lyngdoh of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) was on Tuesday elected unopposed as the new Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

His election followed the resignation of former CEM Shemborlang Rynjah, who stepped down on health grounds. With no candidate put up by the Opposition, Lyngdoh’s election was formally declared by KHADC Chairman Strong Pillar Kharjana during a special session of the Council.

He was escorted to the CEM’s chair by Executive Member Powell Sohkhlet and Opposition leader Titosstarwell Chyne, while nearly all MDCs, including 17 from the VPP, joined the felicitation ceremony.

In his remarks, Chairman Kharjana voiced confidence that Lyngdoh would lead a strong Executive Committee focused on public welfare and assured that the body would work in cooperation with Opposition members.

The new CEM expressed gratitude for the trust reposed in him, while acknowledging the contribution of his predecessor. He urged Rynjah to prioritise his health and said the Council would miss his experience and leadership. Lyngdoh also thanked MDCs across party lines, his own party colleagues, and the people of Nongthymmai for their support
