Veteran Politician S D Khongwir breathed his last today

Former deputy chief minister Standlington D Khongwir passed away in the wee hours today at NEIGHRIMS after a brief illness. He was suffering fropm respiratory tract infection for the past few weeks and breathed his last at 2 AM on 21st November, 2023 at the age of eighty nine years. He was the longest serving headman since January 1968 and held the Mawlai Town Dorbar (MTD) for 35 years since 1988 and retired as the Rangbah Shnong of Mawlai Nonglum this year after a stint of over 55 years. 

The late Mr. S D Khongwir was born in 1934, and was instrumental in the formation of the  coalition government led by former chief minister (L) Darwin Diengdoh Pugh and served as deputy chief minister in both the governments led by the former and the late Brington Buhai Lyngdoh. He  represented the Mawlai constituency as an MLA for twenty-six long years till his retirement from politics in 1998.
