The tourism fraternity of Meghalaya on Friday voiced deep concern over the disappearance of a tourist couple who went missing while visiting the Nongriat area near Sohra (Cherrapunji). The couple has reportedly been untraceable for several days, prompting growing anxiety among locals and stakeholders in the state’s tourism sector. The incident is being viewed as highly unusual for the region, which is generally regarded as safe for visitors.

In a joint statement, tourism stakeholders expressed regret over the fact that the couple has yet to be located. They emphasized that while there is still hope for a positive outcome, the situation has cast a shadow over the state’s otherwise peaceful tourism record.

Tourism leaders highlighted Meghalaya’s rapid development as a sought-after travel destination over the past decade, with a significant boost in the last five years. Areas like Sohra, Nongriat, and other parts of the South Khasi Hills have become increasingly popular, particularly for rural and eco-tourism.

They noted that local communities have actively embraced tourism as a critical driver of employment and economic opportunity, contributing positively to the state’s growth and sustainability.

However, the fraternity also condemned a recent article published by a national daily that described the Khasi Hills as “crime prone.” They criticized the statement as “highly misleading” and “deeply offensive,” arguing that it tarnishes the reputation of the region without justification.

The Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) has formally requested the publication to issue a clarification, asserting that such portrayals undermine the credibility and image of Meghalaya as a safe and welcoming destination for travelers.
