The Hynñiewtrep Border Disputes Redressal Forum (HBDRF), under the leadership  of Thomas Passah has urged upon Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma to intervene in a recent incident linked to the ongoing border dispute with Assam in Lapangap village under West Jaintia Hills District.

In a memorandum submitted to the Chief Minister today, the Forum alleged that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council carried out tree plantation activities in Lapangap, Block-1, on 10 June, 2025 without consulting the local village authorities. A formal complaint was reportedly filed with the Deputy Commissioner of West Jaintia Hills in this regard.

Expressing serious concern over the situation, HBDRF leader, Thomas Passah called upon the state government to deploy adequate police and security forces in the area to ensure public safety and prevent any attempts by Assam Police to set up camps within Meghalaya’s claimed territory.

The Forum also appealed to the Chief Ministers of both Assam and Meghalaya to jointly visit the affected area to maintain peace and prevent further escalation.

It also warned that allowing Assam Police to construct camps could pose a threat to local residents and complicate future efforts to resolve the border dispute.
