Nongshken MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri has questioned the KHADC’s financial constraints for setting up a tribunal under the Khasi Social Custom of Lineage Act, urging the Council to expedite the process instead of citing lack of funds.

Raising a supplementary question during the ongoing Council session, in response to a query by Leader of the Opposition Titos Chyne, Kharpuri told Executive Member in-charge of the Law Department, Deity Majaw, that the Council already has a First Class Magistrate and a standing counsel to oversee the proceedings, thereby minimising additional expenditure.

In her response, Majaw clarified that constituting the tribunal would entail financial implications, including the appointment of two members with expertise in Khasi customary practices and clan lineage, besides an advocate with a minimum of ten years of experience.
