FLOODS, FRONTIERS, AND FUTURE POWER: MEGHALAYA-ASSAM TALKS GAIN MOMENTUM

The Chief Ministers of Meghalaya and Assam held a high-level meeting in Guwahati on Monday to discuss key bilateral issues, including the inter-state border dispute, joint infrastructure projects, and urban flooding in Guwahati.
Meghalaya CM Conrad K. Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, along with senior ministers and officials, participated in the discussions. The two states agreed to task the North Eastern Space Application Centre (NESAC) with conducting a satellite-based study on flood-prone areas in and around Guwahati. The report is expected within three months, after which expert agencies like IIT Roorkee may be consulted for solutions.
On the border issue, Sangma indicated that boundary pillars in six resolved areas would likely be erected by August 15, pending minor clarifications in regions such as Gijang and Tarabari. Talks on the remaining disputed areas will continue.
The two governments also agreed in principle to jointly implement the Kulsi multi-purpose irrigation and hydroelectric project, with public consultations to be held before work begins. Both leaders emphasized the project’s potential for mutual benefits in power, irrigation, and tourism.
