Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly

The Estimates Committee of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, led by Chairman Shri Mayralborn Syiem, MLA of Nongpoh constituency, held an (Oral) meeting with officials of various departments on 16 December 2024, in the Conference Hall of the Members’ Hostel, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Shillong. The purpose of the meeting was to review the performance and progress of the Education Department, Health Department, Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department, and Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Department.

The meeting was attended by committee members Shri Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar (Mawkyrwat MLA), Shri Adelbert Nongrum (North Shillong MLA), Shri Remington Gabil Momin (Rambrai-Jyrngam MLA), Shri Wailadmiki Shylla (Jowai MLA), and Smti Miani D Shira (Ampati MLA), along with officials from the Meghalaya Assembly Secretariat and the respective departments.

The key Highlights of the Meeting are the Education Department, PHE Department (Jal Jeevan Mission), Health Department (MCH Hospitals), and Community & Rural Development (C&RD) Department. The committee reviewed the progress of three Block Institutes of Teacher Education (BITE) and residential schools. It urged the department to expedite the completion and operational readiness of Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) in Ri-Bhoi and East Garo Hills by 2025, the need for uninterrupted implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) in border areas and directed the department to expedite efforts and submit a detailed status report.
The committee assessed the progress of new Maternal and Child Health (MCH) hospitals in Nongstoin and Umsning, targeting operational readiness by 2025. It also called for fast-tracking upgrades to facilities in civil hospitals, Primary Health Centres (PHCs), and Community Health Centres (CHCs) and on the construction of new Block Development Officer (BDO) offices, noting a completion rate of 70-80%. It urged the department to ensure timely project completion to enhance service delivery in C&RD blocks. Hon’ble Chairman Shri Mayralborn Syiem expressed satisfaction with the overall progress of the projects. He stated, “The committee looks forward to seeing the discussions held today with the various departments implemented on the ground in both letter and spirit.”
