The Design Innovation Centre (DIC) at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) embarked on a transformative journey, showcasing a fusion of modern creativity and mechanical prowess through hands-on applications, aided by computer technology and peripherals. Established in 2020 under the stewardship of Dr. R N Saran, during his tenure in the Biochemistry department, the DIC faced initial hurdles in acquiring cutting-edge infrastructure. However, Dr. Saran's perseverance and strategic efforts led to the realization of the project, facilitated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

NEHU, among the select sixteen universities chosen nationwide, emerged as a hub for innovation under the leadership of Prof. R N Saran, complemented by three satellite centers at St. Anthony's College, St. Mary's College, and Guwahati. The DIC flourished under the guidance of the new incumbent, Prof. Donkupar Syiem, who elevated the center to unprecedented standards. A plethora of computerized and mechanical hardware and software were integrated, enabling the production of extraordinary products through Virtual Reality, laser cutting, robotics, 3D printing, and other innovative tools.

Distinguished by its unique structure, the DIC operates without a conventional faculty, instead engaging freelance experts and passionate individuals in creativity and technology. Chancharick Choudhury and Ayesha Langstieh epitomized this ethos, sharing their visionary insights and practical applications of the infrastructure. Their endeavors underscored the DIC's commitment to nurturing local talent through training workshops and short-term courses, offering a pathway for the region's youth to engage with cutting-edge technology and unleash their creative potential.

Further, there will be regular workshops and periodical short-term courses on specific skill-based activities that will be streamlined into prospective career and entrepreneurship.
