SYNJUK KI RANGBAHKUR PUSHES FOR LEGISLATION TO SAFEGUARD MATRILINEAL SYSTEM
The Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur on Thursday urged the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to initiate legislation aimed at protecting and preserving the matrilineal system of clan lineage among the indigenous communities of Meghalaya.
A delegation of the organisation, led by President R.L. Kharpran, called on JHADC Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat and submitted its concerns regarding the need for statutory safeguards to strengthen the traditional clan-based lineage system.
The delegation underscored the importance of the matrilineal system as a defining feature of the socio-cultural identity of the Khasi and Jaintia communities and advocated for the creation of legal and constitutional provisions to recognise Dorbar Kur (clan bodies) and empower Rangbah Kur (clan elders) in the discharge of their customary functions.
The members also stressed that institutional recognition of traditional clan structures would bolster indigenous customs, lineage practices and community governance. They expressed optimism that the proposed legislation would reinforce customary institutions and ensure the preservation of the State's unique matrilineal heritage for future generations.
