Social activist Tarcious Mawlot has strongly opposed any move to allow uranium mining in Meghalaya while urging the state government to formulate a comprehensive policy  which should focus on building a skilled pool of scientists, engineers and technical professionals from within Meghalaya in the event wherein uranium mining is eventually undertaken in the state.

Recalling his earlier efforts on the issue, Mawlot said that during the late 1990s he had met the then Chief Minister of Meghalaya, late Salseng C Marak and had urged him to formulate a similar policy.

He further alleged that although the uranium mining project in Meghalaya has remained stalled due to strong opposition from various quarters, the infrastructural development being undertaken in the stretch from Wahkaji to Chaigaon indicates that the Centre may still intend to proceed with uranium mining activities in the state.

Mawlot also reiterated concerns over the possible environmental and health impacts of uranium mining and stressed that the interests and welfare of local communities must remain a priority in any future decision on the matter. He reiterated his stand on the condition that even representatives of the state should formulate poicies towards safety and security of citizens of the state of Meghalaya.

Lastly, he informed that his meeting with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on 13 May, 2026 was positive wherein the latter welcomed suggesrions from all quarters tiwards this important subject
