In a late-night law-and-order incident, an Additional Superintendent of Police (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, sustained serious injuries after a scooty carrying two persons allegedly rammed into him while police were conducting naka checking at Urkaliar near Samkhamti Petrol Pump in the early hours of Friday.

According to the police account, the incident took place at around 1:30 AM, when personnel were carrying out naka checking as part of heightened law-and-order arrangements. A scooty allegedly attempted to evade the checking point and sped away despite repeated directions from the police to stop.

Police stated that Lovish Garg, IPS, Additional SP (Traffic), EKH, intervened and signalled the rider to halt. However, the scooty allegedly accelerated and struck the officer, leaving him seriously injured.

The injured officer was immediately evacuated to Woodland Hospital for emergency medical attention and has subsequently been shifted to the HD Unit for further treatment.

Police have prima facie indicated that the circumstances surrounding the incident suggest a deliberate act, allegedly aimed at causing grievous injury to the officer while attempting to flee the naka. A case is being registered under attempt to murder provisions.

The two occupants of the scooty are suspected to be members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU). Police said their presence in the area at that hour and the alleged attempt to evade checking are being examined as part of the ongoing investigation.

Reiterating its enforcement stance, the police said strict naka and checking operations will continue to ensure public safety and maintain law and order. It further cautioned that failure to comply with lawful police directions or any act of obstruction against personnel on duty would invite action as per law.
