Speaking during the Assembly proceedings, Sangma flagged the 19 August incidents, describing them as a serious security concern that had caused considerable hardship to the people and disrupted the supply chain of essential goods.

Sangma sought clarity on the action taken by the Government to prevent a recurrence of such incidents and called for those responsible to be identified and dealt with firmly under the law.

The demand came after Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma tabled a suo motu statement in the House on the August 19 incidents.

While acknowledging the steps taken by the State Government, the Opposition Leader maintained that no group had the right to resort to violence, threaten the State’s security or obstruct the movement of essential commodities.

He questioned whether FIRs had been registered against the groups allegedly responsible for blocking roads and interfering with the movement of goods-laden vehicles.

Sangma also urged the Government to strengthen its preventive and enforcement mechanisms, warning that failure to take decisive action could encourage a recurrence of similar incidents.

Responding to the Opposition Leader’s demand, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said the Government was probing the matter from all angles and had not ruled out any possibility as part of the ongoing investigation.
