MAWSYNRAM GROUPS TO MARCH TO SECRETARIAT OVER POWER DISTRIBUTION ROW
A coalition of public organisations from the Mawsynram region has announced a march to the Meghalaya Secretariat on June 12 in protest against the State Government's decision to entrust electricity distribution operations under the Mawsynram Division of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) to SAI Computer.
The decision was taken after the groups alleged that their earlier appeal to the government failed to yield any response. The organisations had previously served a two-week ultimatum demanding the cancellation of SAI Computer's engagement in power distribution activities under the division.
The ultimatum followed a meeting with Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh, who had invited representatives of the organisations for discussions on the issue. However, the groups claimed that their concerns were not adequately addressed despite the deliberations.
Consequently, the coalition unanimously resolved to intensify its agitation and proceed with the planned march to the Secretariat. The protest is expected to be joined by shnong leaders, traditional heads, electricity consumers and residents from Mawphlang, Mawsynram and the C&RD Blocks of Ranikor.
The organisations reiterated their opposition to the outsourcing of power distribution operations and urged the government to reconsider its decision in the interest of consumers and local stakeholders.
