The Khasi Students’ Union, Nongpoh Circle, has renewed its demand for urgent intervention by the Ri-Bhoi district administration and the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited or  (MeECL) to address the persistent power disruptions plaguing Nongpoh and adjoining areas since 2012.

The issue was taken up during a meeting with the Ri-Bhoi Deputy Commissioner on 13 October, 2026, following which the DC assured the union that the matter would be pursued and a joint meeting convened with MeECL officials and KSU representatives to deliberate on possible remedial measures.

Led by its General Secretary, Samla Baiashan Kharshanlor, the KSU apprised the Deputy Commissioner of the adverse impact of frequent power outages on residents, commercial establishments, educational institutions and other sections of society.

The union also reiterated its long-standing demand for the establishment of a 132/33 KV substation in Nongpoh, maintaining that the demand dates back to 2012.

The KSU stated that it has repeatedly taken up the matter with the authorities concerned, in coordination with other pressure groups and local dorbar shnong, but the issue continues to remain unresolved.

The union has called for concrete and time-bound intervention to ensure a reliable power supply and bring an end to the prolonged inconvenience faced by the people of Nongpoh and surrounding areas.
