FROM MARGINS TO MAINSTAGE: KSU EVENT SPOTLIGHTS KHASI IDENTITY IN MIZORAM

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Vairengte Circle, organized a Cultural Meet cum Academic Award ceremony at the Vairengte Community Hall in Kolasib District, aimed at fostering unity among the Khasi community in Mizoram and encouraging academic excellence among Khasi youth.
The event, held near the historic Khasi Veng locality—home to Khasi residents since before the formation of Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Assam—brought together Khasi families from remote areas including Phaisen and Saipum. The programme sought to highlight the importance of education in uplifting the socio-economic condition of the community and preserving their cultural identity.
Mizoram’s Minister for Land Revenue & Settlement and Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, B. Lalchhanzova, attended as the chief guest. KSU General Secretary Donald V. Thabah and Vairengte SDO H. Vanlalbiakzuava were present as guests of honour.
During the event, nine Khasi students were felicitated for their academic achievements in various state and central board examinations, including the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE), the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), and the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE). Despite financial and geographical challenges, these students secured commendable results, with several earning first and second divisions.
KSU leaders also held a separate interaction with Minister Lalchhanzova to address the long-pending demand for Land Settlement Certificates for Khasi households residing in Mizoram. While many have lived in Vairengte and adjoining villages for generations, they remain without formal land titles. The minister assured that the concerned department would soon review the matter and take appropriate action.
The KSU had earlier established its Vairengte Unit in 2009 following incidents of conflict involving Khasi farmers. Since then, it has worked in coordination with the Khasi Welfare Committee to promote dialogue and harmony with the local Mizo population.
