FAMILY SEEKS COMPENSATION FOR PROPERTY DAMAGE IN ALLEGED TEAR GAS FIRING IN JAIAW
A family residing adjacent to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) office has sought compensation for the alleged damage caused to their house during the police action in Jaiaw on the night of August 19.
Speaking to the media, a member of the family alleged that police personnel reached the area at around 11:30 pm and resorted to firing tear gas shells shortly after their arrival. One of the shells allegedly landed on their residence, causing damage to the property.
The family claimed that the police used metal tear gas shells, with the impact allegedly causing damage to their house and creating panic among the residents.
The family has demanded that those who authorised the police action bear the entire cost of repairing the alleged damage, while also questioning the use of tear gas in an area with residential houses in close proximity.
The allegations come amid heightened tension in Jaiaw following the incidents reported in the area on 19 August, 2026.
