Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Thomas A. Sangma on Thursday released a book titled “(L) B. B. Lyngdoh – A Tribute to the Visionary Leader and Former Chief Minister of Meghalaya Whose Ideals Continue to Inspire Generations,” authored by former Assembly Commissioner and Secretary and Adviser (Legislation), Andrew Simons.

Speaking at the release, Sangma described the late B. B. Lyngdoh, who served as Meghalaya Chief Minister on four occasions, as a visionary leader, able parliamentarian and institution-builder who played a significant role in the State’s political evolution.

Referring to Lyngdoh as the “father of coalition politics,” the Speaker highlighted his ability to bring together different political parties and provide stable governance during a period of political uncertainty. He also recalled Lyngdoh’s contributions to issues concerning land, livelihoods, connectivity and development, including the introduction of the MLA Scheme and his role in the establishment of NEIGRIHMS.

Author Andrew Simons said the book seeks to preserve Meghalaya’s formative political history by compiling and editing Lyngdoh’s speeches delivered between 1970 and 2003, including those from the Provisional State Government period. He said the book, completed over nearly three years, would serve as a reference for younger generations, researchers and scholars.

Late B B Lyngdoh’s daughter, Syrpailin Khonglah, recalled her father’s vision of a developed and economically strong Meghalaya, guided by the motto “Health, Wealth and Education.” She also highlighted his emphasis on road connectivity and recalled his initiatives in healthcare and the introduction of the MLA Scheme.

The programme was attended by Deputy Chief Whip Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, MLAs Gavin Miguel Mylliem and other former legislators, former Chief Secretary WMS Pariat, former bureaucrat Rudy Warjri, Padma Shri Patricia Mukhim, officials, family members and other dignitaries.
