The ongoing tit-for-tat blockade of vehicles between Assam and Meghalaya has escalated, with the dispute now threatening to disrupt the supply of fuel and essential commodities to the state.

The development comes amid demands from Assam-based tourist vehicle operators for compensation for vehicles allegedly damaged during the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) two-wheeler rally in Shillong on 19 August, 2026.

In a significant development on Friday afternoon, the Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union, which facilitates the supply of petroleum products across the northeastern states, reportedly decided to suspend the supply of fuel to Meghalaya.

The demand for compensation follows allegations that tourist vehicles from Assam were damaged during incidents of vandalism, arson and stone-pelting that occurred in the aftermath of the KSU rally, organised in support of its five-point demands before the Meghalaya Government.

The situation took a retaliatory turn after transport associations in Meghalaya, in response to the blockade imposed on Meghalaya-bound vehicles by Assam-based operators, began turning back vehicles bearing Assam registration.

The Assam-based union has reportedly cited security concerns, maintaining that the prevailing situation has created apprehension among drivers and visitors travelling to Meghalaya. The unrest that followed the rally also resulted in the arrest of three senior KSU leaders.

Meanwhile, district authorities in Ri Bhoi and West Jaintia Hills have reportedly imposed restrictions on the sale of petrol to the public as a preventive security measure, amid apprehensions that fuel could be misused to set vehicles ablaze or manufacture petrol bombs.

The escalating standoff has also started impacting the movement of essential commodities, with goods-laden trucks carrying food supplies from Assam reportedly being denied entry into Meghalaya.

With the impasse showing no immediate signs of resolution, concerns are mounting over a potential disruption to fuel availability and the supply chain of essential commodities if the blockade persists.

The latest developments have added another dimension to the ongoing Assam-Meghalaya transport dispute, with stakeholders now facing pressure to de-escalate the situation and restore inter-state movement
