Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the year-long centenary celebrations of Rilbong, marking 100 years of the locality, with 25 distinguished personalities honoured posthumously for their contributions to Shillong.

The event, held alongside the Rilbong Durga Puja and the Rilbong Sanatan Hindu Dharma Sabha, was attended by Arts and Culture Minister Shanbor Shullai.

The ‘Trailblazers Awards’ recognise contributions across literature, education, institution building, political leadership, sports and journalism.

Congratulating Rilbong’s residents, Sangma said the locality had stood out for its peaceful coexistence among diverse communities and the contributions of individuals across various fields.

He said the awardees had persevered through difficult times and urged their families and the community to carry forward their legacy by upholding their values and principles.

The awardees were selected by an advisory committee headed by former Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang. Their family members travelled from the United States, Delhi, Kolkata, Dibrugarh and Shillong to receive the honours.

During the programme, the Chief Minister also handed over a sanction letter of Rs 25 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund to the Rilbong Sanatan Hindu Dharma Sabha.

Sangma highlighted the role of community institutions in local development and the importance of preserving cultural and religious heritage.

The 25 awardees represent diverse communities and professions, reflecting the collective contribution of people from different backgrounds to Shillong’s institutions, public life and cultural identity.

The centenary celebrations will continue through the year, commemorating Rilbong’s history and the people who have helped shape Shillong over the past century.
